Case Study : Evolve Military College
Evolve Military College aims to bridge the gap between young people leaving traditional education and starting military training. The Bury-based organisation deliver training programmes, such as its Armed Forces Preparation Traineeship, which gives 16 to 24-year olds the skills needed for life in the forces and guidance from experienced serving and ex-serving personnel. Previously called ‘Military Standard Training’, the company rebranded in August 2019 to coincide with its new academic year and wanted to produce a series of videos to share on its new Facebook page that outline the key values of the British Army and also provide useful advice to young people.
How we worked with Evolve Military College
We held a planning pre-production meeting with the College’s managing director – former Royal Marine, Andrew Emmett – along with Grace at Bury marketing company Pink Labrador PR.
The plan was to film at the Evolve Military College headquarters at the Sea Cadet Buildings in Bury. An initial assessment identified the ideal room as the old drill hall – it was the perfect size although the hardwood floor meant there was a lot of reverberation in the room. But never fear; we’re not short of improvisation ideas at Pixelwave Creative! We took along an old carpet – perfect for reducing echo.
On the day of filming, we also took our portable four-metre-wide panoramic white background and LED lighting equipment to set up a mobile filming studio.
We filmed footage with Andrew – and other former senior Armed Forces personnel, as well as former students, covering a range of topics, including military knowledge, fitness and mental strength.
Each video was scripted by Andrew and Grace and we took teleprompter technology to provide prompts, helping each person on camera to stay on script.
It wasn’t convenient to film additional footage to complement the narrative, so instead we incorporated images from the Ministry of Defence which are available to use under the Open Government Licence.
Following filming, we produced 15 videos – six videos on British Army values and nine interview preparation videos. As part of the Evolve Military College’s rebrand, the team at Think Design created a new logo which we brought to life with styled animation and sound effects.
“It’s exactly 12 months on from when we launched our new branding with the help of Pixelwave Creative. We engaged with its director John Paul with a brief to create a series of information videos for our students aspiring to join the Armed Forces which would be used across our social media platforms.”
“Our plan was to put students and staff in front of camera to give information advice and guidance and speak about personal experiences in order to help new and existing students in their pursuit of a career in the Armed Forces. Some of our staff and students experienced high levels of anxiety at the prospect of being filmed, however, JP and his crew were fantastic in putting everyone at ease and making the environment as comfortable as possible.”
“JP had such a calming and stress-free manner that we achieved our goals within the time allotted. His flexibility and adaptability were key to achieving our targets. From the first meeting to receiving the end product JP was readily contactable and supportive assisting with the planning and staging of the video and we were more than delighted to see the end product.”
“The videos have undoubtedly helped not only students on the programme but helped with attracting further new business and many others aiming to join the Armed Forces but not eligible for one of our programmes. We can’t thank JP and the team enough for their hard work on this project which has given our branding a professional cutting edge.”
